Victoria Rhubarb Seeds (Rheum rhabarbarum) from Survival Garden Seeds allow gardeners to grow a classic heirloom perennial known for its deep crimson-red stalks, dependable productivity, and rich sweet-tart flavor. Named in 1837 during the reign of Queen Victoria, this traditional variety has remained a garden favorite for generations.
Victoria Rhubarb thrives in cooler climates and performs best in USDA zones 3–8. Plants prefer mild temperatures and rich, well-drained soil, returning each spring with vigorous growth. Mature plants produce tall, colorful stalks reaching 30–36 inches high and, once established, can remain productive for 10–15 years or more in northern regions.
This long-lived perennial is prized for its culinary versatility. The tender stalks are ideal for pies, crisps, sauces, jams, and preserves, and they pair especially well with strawberries and other fruits. Rhubarb also freezes, cans, and freeze-dries exceptionally well, making it a valuable crop for seasonal harvests and long-term storage.
Note: Rhubarb leaves are toxic and should not be consumed.
Classic Heirloom Performance:
- Deep red stalks with classic sweet-tart flavor
- Productive perennial returning year after year
- Stalks grow 30–36 inches tall
- Best suited for cool to moderate climates
Why Customers Love Victoria Rhubarb:
- Open-pollinated heirloom variety
- Long-lived perennial with 10–15+ year productivity
- Reliable yields once established
- Excellent for baking, preserving, and freezing
- Ideal for home gardens and food storage planning
- Traditional variety with historical significance
How to Use / How to Grow:
Soak rhubarb seeds for 2–3 hours or lightly nick the hard seed coat before planting to improve germination. For best results, cold stratify seeds by refrigerating them in a damp paper towel inside a sealed bag for 4–6 weeks. Start seeds indoors or sow in prepared soil, then transplant seedlings into a sunny, well-drained garden bed enriched with organic matter. Allow plants to fully establish before harvesting, typically beginning in the second year for strongest, long-term yields.
